Depolarizing Chipless RFID Tag Made Orientation Insensitive by Using Ground Plane Interaction

The ground plane has never been considered as a degree of freedom to be used for chipless radio frequency (RF) identification (RFID) tag design purposes. For the first time, we show that interaction with can exploited achieve challenging designs, such depolarizing insensitive orientation (i.e., nonzero cross polar any roll angle). principle relies on perturbation symmetry merely one microstrip dipole placed near edge substrate. Chipless RFID tags are realized using three different shapes substrate (square, octagonal, and circular) multiple edges. measurements performed in semianechoic office environment attached objects (cardboard box metallic plate). measured results square present magnitude variations (< 10 dB) but detectable over full 360° even real yielding an “orientation-insensitive” detection system. Compared previous variability peaks is negligible.
